AN INVESTIGATION by US newspaper Computer Reseller News has confirmed anecdotal reports that AMD cannot supply enough processors to meet channel demand.
And, said the newspaper, that has prompted chip rival Intel to fill the holes by writing to US channel players.
AMD said that there's a problem supplying chips because demand has risen from both OEMs and system builders.
But many system integrators are blaming design wins with Dell as a major reason for the shortages.
While it's possible to get older generation processors, the real strain comes with chips using the desktop AM2 socket.
Intel claims it's a process generation ahead of AMD and producing 65 nanometre chips aplenty.
A recent roadmap seen by the INQ shows that AMD is distinguishing between "strategic" players and other - presumably channel based firms. The situation is exacerbated because over the last four years, AMD has presented itself as a channel champion.
