subject: Microsoft & The EU
I live in the UK and have been watching the escaltion of all this anti competitive debacle regarding Vista .
Why dont they just let the consumers decide what they want .
Vista is Microsofts Operating system so they should be able to include whatever they want in it .
Personally I think Media Player sucks so I'll just download something else . Thats freedom of choice . I dont particularly like Microsofts firewall so again I'll download something else .
Wheres the problem the EU is complaining about ? .
Its not as if when you buy the OS it only works with Microsoft apps .
If the EU strips Vista down I'll just buy a US copy instead .

Subject: Voleware malware protection program for Vista
Hello Mike,
I read an article on dailytech, and the following caught my attention:
"If the software is discovered to be counterfeit or non-genuine, the user may be asked to reactivate their copy of Windows. Product keys can be blocked for a number of reasons, including if the product key is abused, stolen, pirated or seized as a result of anti-piracy enforcement efforts."
This means that even If I spend too many dollars on buying Vista, I could end up with nothing because someone used my license-key even though I would have purchased my copy, from a reputable dealer. What's even more worrying is the fact that they have direct control over ones windows, and are able to manipulate at will, and even disable it.
Although this is already the case, see the number of nice little problems with windows-update, the claws of the Vole are sinking deeper. And I still don't have the impression that people are waking up! Instead of putting their efforts in protecting the software against piracy, they'd might better be working on making it stable, bugfree and perhaps smaller... 512mb just to run the OS is a bit excessive isn't it?
Regards, Michel
PS. Glad to have found the Uk site again!

75 deaths is really quite shocking in just one year.
There must be some serious health and safety issues in some of the reporter congested warzones.

Subject: Letters: A Canuck's take on AMD, as of Late
Perhaps Hector would prefer an Irish Wake ?
It has been a solid four months since we saw the Intel Conroe 6600 best the AMD FX60 on virtually every benchmark, and some by a wide margin.
Couple this with the fact that the Intel piece is 1/4 the price of the AMD piece (www.ebay.com). Add to the mix the fact that Intel will be shipping quad cores in Mid November, i.e. ~ 5 weeks. If Intel can sink 9B $ US in new fabs, then they have very deep pockets indeed. More than enough green in the bank to subsidize Conroes, 'til whenever AMD capitulates.
I have been waiting for the prices to drop for a while now on AMD gear over here, but to no avail. The channel must have been stuffed to the brim. Since the vendors bought it at full whack and can't now give it away (and aren't wont to: "why should we take the hit damn it !? ), I'd say Hector's in a bit of a spot. Intel, playing the classic Grinch, has stolen Hector's Christmas. Who in their right mind would buy AMD when Intel is eight orders of magnitude the value? Fourth Quarters ( Jan 1-Mar 31 ) are historically dismal, so unless we see from AMD: 1) a quad core, 2) that can best the Conroe, 3) at a price of $ 200.00 USD or less, and 4) before Christmas, this company is history. What investment firm will let the company stock slide southward two quarters guaranteed, possibly four, only to face a diminishing market share? AMD screwed up big time. Perhaps they weren't paying attention. Perhaps they just weren't listening.
I own two AMD boxes, among four (yes, I'm a programmer). Pity the company will have to go under before I am finally offered the ability to upgrade them, at a remotely realistic price.
P.S. Thank you Hector for having nowhere on your website for people to respond, send comments, suggestions, or just sound off. Yet another affirmation that you people just don't want to listen. Farewell.
Mr. Magee, you indeed have a wonderful news source. Our team reads it every day.

Perhaps if less journalists kept on getting shot, you'd have someone around to check your copy, non?
